    1840-D Five Dollar, XF40
    Scarce, Early D-Mint Issue

1840-D $5 Narrow Mill XF40 ANACS. Variety 3-B. Tall D. This variety is significantly more available than its Small Mintmark counterpart. The 1840-D overall is one of the scarcer issues among Dahlonega fives. It ranks sixth in both Overall and Condition Rarity, according to Doug Winter. He estimates that somewhere in the range of 150 to 175 individual coins are known. A few traces of light russet patina can be seen around some of the devices, and the surfaces are lightly abraded, as one would expect of this issue.
