Description

1854-D Half Eagle, MS62
Possibly Finest Weak D Example

1854-D $5 Weak D MS62 NGC. Variety 37-DD. The Dahlonega mintmark is fully outlined but has very low relief, since the mintmark punch was very lightly tapped into the reverse die. A survey of our auction archives suggests that only one in six 1854-D fives is the Weak D variety; a majority are the Variety 36-AA Large D. We located only one prior Heritage appearance of a Mint State Variety 37-DD, graded MS61, which makes the present lot possibly the finest known '54-D Weak D five. It is a nicely struck and semiprooflike apricot-gold example with uncommonly smooth surfaces save for prominent field clashes, as issued. Housed in a circa-2000 holder.
