    1855-C Half Eagle, Well-Struck AU50
    Nicely Preserved

1855-C $5 AU50 NGC. Variety 1. The production of 1855-C half eagles was a considerable 39,788 coins, and all were struck using a single pair of dies, as far as is known today. The overworked reverse, in its final stages (not seen here), eventually developed a spectacular cud and rim break over AMER. This piece is in an earlier die state and shows a decent (if undramatic) strike for the date, with only stars 1-4 lacking their radial details. Apricot-gold surfaces show considerable retained luster and only minor abrasions consistent with a short spell in commerce. Census: 13 in 50, 82 finer (8/16).
