    Description

    1855-D Five Dollar, AU58
Medium D Variant, Attractive and Original

1855-D $5 Medium D AU58 NGC. Variety 38-CC. Of the 22,432 pieces struck of the 1855-D, it is estimated today only 125-150 examples survive in all grades. Fully two-thirds of the survivors grade VF or XF, leaving only 27-35 pieces in AU condition. This is an attractive example that should be of interest to collectors who are looking for an original coin for a date or type set. The surfaces are light reddish-gold and there are only small abrasions scattered about (not the usual heavy ones). A couple of minor planchet depressions can be found in the right obverse field, but these in no way detract from the coin's overall attractiveness.(Registry values: P4)
