Vivid 1861-C Five Dollar, Stunning MS 63 Condition

1861-C $5 MS 63 NGC. Ex: Elrod. On April 20, 1861, rebel forces seized the Charlotte Mint and forced its employees to take oaths of loyalty to the Confederacy on pain of loosing their jobs. The following month, 887 1861-C half eagles were produced under the auspices of the Confederate States of America. With a die crack through the top of AMERI in AMERICA, the present piece is a suspected, although not conclusive survivor of the Confederate delivery.
Regardless of which flag it owes its allegiance to, there is little doubt that the present specimen is the single finest certified survivor of the issue. In fact, between both NGC and PCGS there are only 3 Mint State examples recorded to date (9/99). The strike is typically strong and the smooth surfaces are quite uncommon for an issue that is known for numerous abrasions. A few planchet flakes (as produced) are noted in the reverse field about the head of the eagle, but the flashy yellow-gold color ensures the pleasing overall eye appeal. In sum, this is a beautiful survivor of this elusive, conditionally challenging C-mint five.
