1861-D Half Eagle, Choice AU
Natural Color, Singular Key Date
Only 1,597 Coins Struck
1861-D $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 46-JJ. The Annual Mint
Director's Report of 1861 noted: "At the branch mint at
Dahlonega, the deposits received, up to the 28th day of February,
A. D. 1861, were $62,193 05; the coinage, $60,946; and the number
of pieces, 13,442. No report has been received from this branch
since the day last named." That was because the facility had been
taken over by the Confederacy in April. Of the number of pieces
struck, 1,597 were 1861-D half eagles. This represents the ultimate
key issue in Dahlonega coinage, along with the gold dollar struck
that year. Winter writes: "When available, it is seen in Very Fine
to Extremely Fine grades. It is seldom offered for sale in About
Uncirculated and most of the examples in this range grade About
Uncirculated-53 to About Uncirculated-55." Roughly 75 to 85 coins
are thought to exist.Coloration is natural -- a rare quality -- with shades of red and khaki-gold. Most stars show at least partial radial lines, and the eagle's feathers and olive leaves are bold. A scuff above the eye and a mark in the field below OF are the only singular flaws. Lightly peppered marks are essentially unimportant. Census: 7 in 55, 16 finer (2/18).(Registry values: P6)
