1862 Half Eagle, Sharply Defined AU53
    Rare in All Grades

1862 $5 AU53 NGC. By 1862, at the height of the Civil War, the Federal government no longer paid out gold coins, accounting for the dramatically low mintage of gold eagles (4,430 pieces). As might be expected, the 1862 five dollar is rare in all grades. In fact, the PCGS website estimates fewer than 100 coins are known in all levels of preservation. NGC and PCGS have seen a mere 74 specimens, only three of which are in Mint State.

The reddish-gold surfaces of this AU53 example are imbued with wisps of yellow-gold and a solid strike has left strong definition on all design elements. Neither side is severely abraded. The pattern of minute marks (some of which are single milling marks) on Liberty's cheek and upper neck will help to identify this coin. The new owner of this Civil War-era rarity will be highly pleased with this acquisition. Census: 6 in 53, 18 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 25VP, PCGS# 8292)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
