    Description

    1862 Five Dollar, Choice VF
    Just 4,430 Pieces Issued

1862 $5 VF35 NGC. Ex: Richmond Collection. The tiny mintage of 4,430 pieces was likely intended to prevent collector speculation over the 35 proofs. By 1862, gold coins were hoarded on the East Coast and traded for a premium over Federal paper money. The present example appears sharp for the VF35 level though the orange-gold surfaces are mildly bright.
Ex: Richmond Collection, Part I (David Lawrence, 7/2004), lot 1411, which realized $1,323.
