Description

1872-S Half Eagle, MS61
Condition Census Rarity

1872-S $5 MS61 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint struck 36,400 half eagles in 1872, and most of these pieces were distributed into circulation. This issue is typically collected no finer than AU today, and often only an XF or VF coin can be acquired. PCGS and NGC each list only two Mint State submissions of an 1872-S five, all in MS61, increasing the likelihood of duplication even within that trivial number. We have not handled a Mint State piece in more than a decade, and we have never before seen a PCGS-graded Mint State coin. This piece could reward years and possibly even decades of patience for the collector seeking an Uncirculated 1872-S half eagle.

Luster yields rich peach-gold color, while some faint marks in the fields and a couple of ticks on Liberty's cheek are all that determine the grade. Typical of the 1872-S, there is slight strike weakness on Liberty's hair curls and the eagle's neck. However, this coin remains atop the Condition Census for the issue. Population: 2 in 61, 0 finer (9/20).
