    1876-CC Five Dollar, AU55
    Rare This Fine
    Partially Prooflike Fields

1876-CC $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Coming from a small mintage of 6,887 coins, the 1876-CC half eagle is scarce in all grades and underappreciated in rare AU condition. Only two Mint State examples are known, both well out of reach for the average collector. Garrett and Guth write in their gold coin Encyclopedia: "Like most of the early Carson City half eagles of the 1870s, this issue was heavily circulated in the West and most of the surviving examples are heavily worn or damaged."

This Choice AU representative displays bold detail with prooflike mirroring in the protected regions of the fields. Scattered light handling marks are not bothersome considering the grade. This piece is undeniably high-end for the issue. Population: 7 in 55, 4 finer (2/17).
