Description

1879-S Half Eagle, MS64
Conditional Rarity

1879-S $5 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The majority of the 426,200 half eagles struck in San Francisco in 1879 entered circulation, and high level Mint State pieces survived as a matter of chance. There were few collectors on the west coast at the time, and a collection of half eagles quickly became an expensive proposition. This Choice Mint State piece is a lovely example with faint peripheral blue toning that frames the lustrous orange-gold surfaces. Population: 12 in 64, 1 finer. CAC: 2 in 64, 0 finer (10/19).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25X9, PCGS# 8350, Greysheet# 9069)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
