Description

1880-CC Five Dollar, AU55
Hints of Luster Remain

1880-CC $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 2-C. Ex: Rian's Bequest. The mintmark is closer to VE than to the eagle. The 1880-CC half eagle is more collectible than subsequent Carson City five dollar gold pieces from this decade. Possibly as many as 500 coins survive, though just 14 to 16 examples are estimated in Uncirculated. This Choice AU offering displays hints of remaining luster around well-detailed relief elements. Light orange-gold surfaces are generally smooth.
