    1896 Half Eagle, MS66
One of the Top Three Finest Examples

1896 $5 MS66 NGC. Philadelphia half eagles of the mid-1890s are scarcer in high grades than most non-specialists realize. Although mintages vary from the tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands, Gems are seldom encountered and Premium Gems are rare. In the case of the 1896, just 58,960 five dollar gold pieces were struck. This MS66 example ranks among the top two coins at NGC and is tied with one other submission at PCGS (1/20).

Areas of deep sun-gold color meld with swathes of lighter peach-gold. Both sides are strongly struck from the centers to rims, radiating thick mint frost throughout. The obverse exhibits a few tiny, shallow flecks, while the reverse appears nearly pristine.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25YK, PCGS# 8392)
