    Description

1905 Liberty Half Eagle, PR65 Cameo
    Unusual Contrast

1905 $5 PR65 Cameo NGC. JD-1, R.5. Dannreuther Die State a/a. The 1905 proof Liberty half eagle claims a mintage of 108 pieces, making it the last Liberty half eagle with a mintage over 100. John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population at 60-75 examples in all grades. The Mint switched to an all-brilliant finish for proof coins after 1902, so proofs of this era seldom show Cameo contrast.

The present coin is a happy exception to the rule, as the sharply detailed design elements have enough mint frost to create a noticeable cameo effect against the deeply reflective fields. The pleasing yellow-gold surfaces are well-preserved and overall visual appeal is terrific. Census: 5 in 65 Cameo (1 in 65+), 3 finer (3/19).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 3YDP, PCGS# 88500)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
