1879-CC $5 MS61 NGC. Winter 2-A. A heavy die line running through the base of the E in LIBERTY immediately identifies the Winter 2-A die pair. The reverse is shared with the other die marriage for this date. Overall, the 1879-CC half eagle is rare in Mint State. Only 17,281 pieces were struck, and most were lost to attrition, with none preserved for numismatic purposes until decades later. Heaton's Mint Marks published in the 1890s sparked the dawn of widespread numismatic attention to the branch mint issues, but by that time the 1879-CC half eagle's rarity in Mint State had already been sealed.

This MS61 coin displays sharp definition throughout the stars and border legends, with warm orange-gold luster and scattered small abrasions, as are commensurate with the grade. Census: 7 in 61 (2 in 61+), 0 finer (11/24).
