1885 Liberty Nickel, Luminous MS67
Condition Census Registry Coin
1885 5C MS67 NGC. Not only the accepted key date in the
series, the 1885 Liberty nickel is also a major condition rarity.
The date, with a mintage of little more than 1.4 million coins, is
scarce in MS66, and Superb Gems are of the utmost rarity. NGC lists
only two such coins -- this piece, and one in MS67+; PCGS reports
six submissions in MS67, also with none finer (9/19). These top
Registry coins are mostly likely to change hands at auction, and
yet, auction appearances of them are few and far between. Since our
Permanent Auction Archives began in 1993, we have handled a Superb
Gem 1885 Liberty nickel on only three occasions. Prices realized
have ranged from $18,000 to $43,200.This softly frosted example is fresh to our auctions. Delicate lilac iridescence adorns the luminous surfaces and cartwheel effect, while the design elements showcase tremendous sharpness. Neither side has a single mentionable abrasion.(Registry values: N4719)
