Description

1885 Liberty Nickel, MS64
Key Date
Obverse Struck Through

1885 5C -- Obverse Struck Through -- MS64 NGC. The 1885 nickel is the key to the series with a low mintage just over 1.47 million pieces. The issue is only the second lowest in the series behind the 1912-S (238,000 pieces), but the 1885 remains the scarcer of the two. This Choice example displays vibrant luster and warm golden toning on each side. As NGC notes, the obverse is interrupted by a strikethrough that starts before Liberty's eye and runs over her hair to just above the ear, and another along her jawline. It appears the coin was struck through debris of some sort.(Registry values: N1793)
