Description

Sharp Gem 1886 Liberty Nickel

1886 5C MS65 PCGS. The business strike 1886 Liberty nickel is closely tied to the more illustrious 1885 issue, and both are keys to the series. The 1885 saw a mintage of nearly 1.5 million pieces, increasing to 3.3 the following year. However, in Gem condition the 1886 is even more elusive than the 1885, and the prices for the two dates are not far apart. This example offers frosty olive-gray surfaces with considerable field-device contrast, and a strike that is sharp, save for a couple of obverse stars and the lower left ear of corn. Some wispy die cracks appear on both sides. A nice acquisition for a Gem set. Population: 33 in 65, 4 finer (8/08).(Registry values: N2998)
