Description
1886 Liberty Nickel, MS66+
Sharp and Beautifully Toned
Tied for the Finest Known
1886 5C MS66+ PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Rafferty. The
familiarity of the 1886 Liberty nickel as a key date is enhanced by
its absolute rarity in Premium Gem condition. No Superb Gems are
known, making a trio of MS66+ PCGS coins the finest. We had the
privilege of offering one of the other Plus-graded Condition Census
coins in our October 2015 New York Signature sale, where it
realized a near-record $28,200. This example is arguably finer
visually, showing sharper detail on the stars and lower wreath
along with blended rainbow border toning on the obverse that
surrounds a light lavender-blue interior; the reverse shows warm
golden toning overall. No abrasions are seen, and a full MS67 grade
might have been achieved were the luster minutely more vibrant.
Population: 11 in 66 (3 in 66+), 0 finer. CAC: 10 in 66, 0 finer
(10/17).From The Rafferty Collection of Nickel Coinage. (Registry values: N2998)
