Description
Frosty Key 1896 Nickel, MS66
1896 5C MS66 PCGS. The mintage for 1896 was a paltry 8.8 million Liberty Head nickels, a figure reflecting that the nation had not yet recovered from the Panic of 1893. The issue thus became a key in the series, and sharply struck examples are seldom seen. This is one such piece, however, which shows good detailing on the obverse star centrils, the hair above Liberty's brow, and on the left ear of corn on the lower reverse. The silver-gray surfaces show no discernible color, but there is considerable mint frost throughout, adding to the premium appeal. PCGS has certified only six examples in MS66, with none finer (8/08).(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 277B, PCGS# 3857, GSID# 2961)
