Description

Splendid 1840 Quarter Eagle, AU53

1840 $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. This briefly circulated piece has lots of eye-catching luster and no marks worthy of individual mention. The star above the point of Liberty's coronet and the eagle's left (facing) leg are soft, but the rest of the details are bold. This conditionally scarce example would make an excellent first-year representative. One of just 18,800 pieces minted. Census: 11 in 53, 31 finer (7/08).(Registry values: P2)
