    Description

Mint State First Year of Type 1840 Quarter Eagle

1840 $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. The 1840 premier Liberty (or Coronet type) quarter eagle was not widely saved at the time of issue. Example grading finer than XF are rare. Under magnification, this example shows a moderate amount of small contact marks and field abrasions, none overly distracting. The surfaces are a delightful, lustrous greenish-gold. The strike is soft on Liberty's highpoint hair curls, on star 6, and on the eagle's left (facing) leg and right claw. Despite these minor condition qualifiers, this is an appealing and rare Mint State coin for the date or type collector. Census: 4 in 61, 8 finer (12/05).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25GA, PCGS# 7717)
