Description

1840 $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. The premier Liberty Quarter Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1840 was produced to the extent of just 18,859 pieces. Since numismatics had not yet come into its own in this country, the 1840 was not saved in as significant numbers as many later first-year issues in U.S. coinage history. This important Mint State representative is honey-gold in sheen with modest brightness in the fields. The strike is a little uneven with most of the readily evident softness concentrated on the reverse eagle. Striations (as struck) are seen in the fields, but the number of abrasions is relatively minimal for the assigned grade. This is the highest graded 1840 Liberty Quarter Eagle that we can remember offering at a major auction. (NGC ID# 25GA, PCGS# 7717)

    Weight: 4.18 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
