1840-C Quarter Eagle, AU58
Above Average for the Issue
1840-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Winter-1. The NGC census data shows
the submission of 163 numerically graded examples of this issue
with an average grade of AU53. The present piece is slightly above
average. This piece was struck on a well prepared planchet, but
shows several surface abrasions, a common occurrence on this issue.
The surfaces are bright and retain generous amounts of original
mint luster. The obverse is sharply defined while the reverse shows
some striking softness on the eagle's neck and wings. Census: 32 in
58, 17 finer (12/24).Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2003), lot 8444.(Registry values: P2)
