Description

    1840-C Quarter Eagle, MS63
    Among the Finest Certified

1840-C $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Variety 1. As with many of the higher-grade examples of this issue, the present coin is extremely well-struck. Interestingly, the 1840-C tends to be the best-struck of the four mints that made quarter eagles in this year. Even more interesting, by 1842 the strike of quarter eagles had diminished significantly. The green-gold surfaces on this specific example are slightly reflective, and there is intermixed satiny luster around the devices. The fields are virtually free of marks, and this is certainly an impressive example that would fit into even the finest set of Charlotte quarter eagles.
As with many first-year-of-type coins, the 1840-C quarter eagle was saved in small quantities and, as a result, there are a decent number of Uncirculated pieces known. None grade higher than MS63, and the population of coins in this grade at both PCGS and NGC is slightly inflated by resubmissions. It is likely that just two or three separate MS63 coins are known, and this is the only one currently available to advanced collectors.
