Description
Key 1840-D Quarter Eagle, AU50
First D-Mint Liberty Head
1840-D $2 1/2 AU50 NGC. Variety 1-A. The year 1840 saw the
first use of the Liberty Head design on Dahlonega quarter eagles.
The issue is rare in all grades, due to the small mintage of 3,532
pieces. Approximately 65-70 examples are known today and Doug
Winter believes the date is the rarest Dahlonega quarter eagle in
AU50 or better grades (5-8 estimated AU survivors). The present
coin displays a typical strike for the issue, with weakness present
on both sides and more detail evident on the obverse. Some small
abrasions on Liberty's face are consistent with the grade. Census:
8 in 50, 14 finer (2/10).From The Lucy Llewellyn Collection of Southern Gold.(Registry values: P2)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25GC, PCGS# 7719, Greysheet# 8334)
