Description

1840-D Quarter Eagle, AU50
Late Die State -- Multiple Die Cracks

1840-D $2 1/2 AU50 NGC. Variety 1-A. This subdued yellow-gold piece shows ample remaining luster across the reverse, and the devices are surrounded by deeper reddish patina. Struck from nearly shattered dies, the obverse has a diagonal crack between 4:30 and 10:30; the reverse displays six bold radial cracks that converge upon the eagle. A mere 3,532 pieces were struck, but perhaps a few too many given the state of the dies. Minor striking softness appears on the eagle's neck, and a couple of shallow handling marks are noted on the cheek. Census: 8 in 50, 14 finer (5/11).
