Description
1840-D Liberty Quarter Eagle, AU50
Seldom Seen Issue
1840-D $2 1/2 AU50 NGC. Winter 1-A. The 1840-D is
among the rarest of the quarter eagle issues, with one of the
lowest mintages from the mint, with just 3,532 coins. The issue is
rare in Mint State, with just four known coins between both PCGS
and NGC. Less than 100 pieces are known between both services and
there is sure to be overlap between the graded examples. Doug
Winter estimates a survivorship of 60 to 80 pieces. This example displays gorgeous honey-gold luster with illustrious fields. As expected for the grade there are a plethora of abrasions and marks, though none overly dimmish the eye appeal. The piece is overall well-struck with just minute weakness along the reverse. The piece is highly desirable for those looking for this seldom-seen issue.(Registry values: P2)
