Description

Rare 1840-D Quarter Eagle, AU50

1840-D $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The first Liberty Head quarter eagle struck at the Dahlonega Mint, the 1840-D boasts a minuscule mintage of 3,532 pieces. Doug Winter believes the date is the rarest issue of the series from the charismatic Southern mint in grades at the AU level and above. The strike shows the usual weakness on the shield and eagle's leg. Many interesting die cracks are evident on the reverse. Population: 11 in 50, 8 finer (3/09).(Registry values: P2)
