    Description

Rare Date 1840-D Quarter Eagle, AU55

1840-D $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS, CAC. The Liberty Head design made its first appearance in 1840, and the mintage of quarter eagles at the Dahlonega Mint was a paltry 3,532 pieces. In the Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth report, "The 1840-D quarter eagle is one of the rarest dates from this mint, if not from the entire Liberty Head quarter eagle series." The present coin is an extremely attractive example, with a decent strike, and only slight wear on the eagle's leading leg. The surfaces are lustrous and abrasions are minimal. Only nine coins have been certified finer than this example at NGC and PCGS combined. Population: 2 in 55, 3 finer (12/08).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25GC, PCGS# 7719)
