Description

1840-O Quarter Eagle, MS62
Conditionally Rare, First Year of Type

1840-O $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 1. This is the Large O variety, with the mintmark nearly centered above the point of the fraction bar. The Louisiana branch mint struck 33,580 quarter eagles in 1840 -- its second year of operation and the first for which Liberty Head two and a half dollar gold pieces were manufactured. The 1840-O is one of the more challenging issues in the series. Doug Winter estimates only 125 to 175 examples survive in all grades, including eight to 10 pieces in Mint State.

The centers are incomplete struck, as always. However, stars 3 to 13 exhibit full centers and radials lines, and the date and legends are bold. Lightly abraded surfaces display deep orange-gold color with red and lavender accents. Population: 6 in 62, 3 finer (11/21).
