    1840-O Quarter Eagle, MS62
    Virtually Unobtainable Any Finer

1840-O $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 1. Large Mintmark, fraction bar points to right side of mintmark, more common than the Small Mintmark. The 1840-O is popular as the first New Orleans quarter eagle with the Liberty Head design. It appears at auction only infrequently and is considered rare in any grade. Mint State pieces are especially elusive and are virtually unobtainable above MS62.
The yellow-gold surfaces on this example display pronounced greenish overtones, possess nice luster, and are moderately prooflike. The central areas are softly struck, a typical characteristic of the issue. This piece is one of seven so graded at PCGS, with none finer, while NGC has certified five MS62 pieces and a single MS63 (9/11).
