    1841-C Quarter Eagle, Attractive AU50
    Elusive Early Charlotte Issue

1841-C $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS. Variety 1. Only a single die pair is known for the production of 10,281 quarter eagles of the 1841-C vintage. Most circulated extensively during the early years of the Charlotte Mint, a period when the Bechtlers had largely (or entirely) ceased coinage, and small-denomination gold in the Carolinas and Georgia saw burgeoning demand. The average circulated example grades between XF45 and AU50, but certified examples are known as low as Fine 12. These factors make the 1841-C among the rarest Charlotte Mint quarter eagle issues. This piece shows about half of the luster remaining, but a patch of small digs shows before Liberty's nose, and other smaller marks are scattered about. Attractive amber-gold color is a plus. The reverse strike is typical, strong save for the lower eagle's legs, and clash marks are seen on that side. Population: 13 in 50, 23 finer (5/15).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 54TU, PCGS# 7721)

    Weight: 4.18 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
