Description

1842-C Quarter Eagle, MS61
Conditionally Rare

1842-C $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. Only one die pair is known for the 1842-C quarter eagles, and examples are rarely found in Mint State grades. This is just the fourth Mint State 1842-C quarter eagle that we have handled since the 1993 beginning of our Permanent Auction Archives. The high watermark was an MS65 example that we sold in 1999. Others include an MS62 PCGS example that we sold in 2017, and an MS61 PCGS example that we sold in 2009. While typical weakness appears along the eagle's right leg at the viewer's left, this piece features sharper details than usual. The surfaces show trivial marks on the reflective fields. This is a lovely piece for the advanced collector. Census: 2 in 61, 2 finer (11/21).
