    Description

    1842-D Variety 3-F Quarter Eagle, AU53
    Repunched Date

1842-D $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Variety 3-F. There is only one die pair known for 1842-D, and it exists in early die states (as here) with a sharply repunched date, and later lapped die states with the repunching no longer visible. Only about 100 examples survive from the 4,643-coin mintage, and most of those survivors grade VF-XF. Doug Winter estimates that less than 20 examples exist in AU or better grades. This piece has wispy peripheral orange toning on its light yellow-gold surfaces with minimal grade-consistent marks. Census: 8 in 53, 26 finer (8/16).
