    Description

    1842-D Quarter Eagle, XF45
    Scarce Low-Mintage Issue

1842-D $2 1/2 XF45 PCGS. Variety 3-F. A scant mintage of only 4,643 quarter eagles at the Dahlonega Mint in 1842 resulted in the survival of only 85 to 105 examples in all grades today, per the research of Doug Winter. The typical coin resides in the XF or lower range, with anything finer being particularly elusive; only four pieces have been certified as Mint State, all NGC coins. The present piece is from a late die state, with the repunching on the bottom of the 1 and 8 in the date slightly faded. Subtle orange-gold overtones accent bright, green-gold surfaces, while the devices are well-struck with only light wear. A pleasing Choice XF example of this seldom seen Dahlonega issue. Population: 15 in 45, 24 finer (10/14).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25GJ, PCGS# 7725)

    Weight: 4.18 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
