Description
1842-O Liberty Quarter Eagle, AU55
Elusive Issue in High Grade
1842-O $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. No quarter eagles were
struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1841, but production was resumed
in 1842 when a small mintage of 19,800 pieces was accomplished. The
1842-O is an elusive issue in high grade, but the supply has
increased somewhat in recent years, suggesting a small hoard may
have come on the market in the 1990s. This attractive Choice AU
specimen exhibits just a touch of wear on the well-detailed design
elements and the pleasing orange-gold surfaces are remarkably
lightly abraded. Census: 30 in 55, 37 finer (11/21).From The Buxton Collection. (Registry values: P2)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25GK, PCGS# 7726, Greysheet# 8340)
Weight: 4.18 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
