Description

Important Uncirculated 1843-C Large Date Quarter Eagle

1843-C $2 1/2 Large Date, Plain 4 MS61 PCGS. Variety 5-D. Struck from dies with the reverse rotated nearly 90 degrees; this is seen more often on the 1843-C Large Date than any other quarter eagle from this mint. The 18 in the date and the mintmark are clearly repunched, as on all examples. Both the obverse and the reverse are mostly well detailed with some minor weakness in the centers. Some light cabinet friction can be seen in the obverse fields; the reverse is clean and choice with bold, undisturbed luster. There is an absence of hairlines and just a few small nicks in the left obverse field keep this coin from grading a point higher. The luster is excellent with a soft, frosty appearance. This is a piece that clearly has never been messed-with and it displays medium to deep yellow-gold color with the obverse a bit deeper in hue than the reverse. Here is a potentially excellent type coin for the collector who would like to add a single high quality Charlotte quarter eagle to his set.
The 1843-C Large Date is one of the more obtainable quarter eagles from this mint. There are 175-225 pieces known but the vast majority are well worn. There are probably two to three dozen properly graded AUs and as many as eight or nine Uncirculated pieces including two Gems.
