Description
Prized Type 1843-D Quarter Eagle, AU50
Small D
1843-D $2 1/2 Small D AU50 NGC. Variety 4-D. The 1843-D
quarter eagle is an available issue in the context of Dahlonega
quarter eagles, with a "large" original mintage of 36,209 pieces.
Doug Winter estimates a surviving population of 250-300 examples in
all grades. The issue is prized as a mintmark type coin. Most
examples seen are in lower grades, and the issue is surprisingly
scarce at the AU level. The coin offered here features a sharp
strike for a D-Mint coin, with slight softness on Liberty's curls
and the eagle's feathers. The pleasing greenish-gold surfaces show
appropriate abrasions for the grade.(Registry values: P1)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25GP, PCGS# 7730, GSID# 8343)
