1843-O $2 1/2 Large Date, Plain 4 MS63 NGC. Variety 1. The Large Date 1843-O is much scarcer than its Small Date counterpart. Doug Winter ranks is as second rarest of all O-mint quarter eagles, and fifth in high-grade rarity. Only 100 to 125 pieces are believed known in all grades. On Doug's Condition Census this coin is listed as #4 but is tied with two other pieces at this grade level. This piece is remarkably well struck for the issue with the only noticeable area of weakness on the eagle's left (facing) leg. The bright yellow-gold surfaces have a pronounced semiprooflike gleam with considerable satin-like luster on the devices. This combination gives the coin a mild cameo contrast, an effect that is quite unusual and unexpected for a New Orleans gold coin. Magnification shows nothing except the smallest abrasions, certainly nothing that can be considered distracting or even especially helpful in tracing the pedigree of this important coin.
