Description
1843-O Two and a Half, MS64
Small Date, Crosslet 4
Third Finest Known
1843-O $2 1/2 Small Date, Crosslet 4 MS64 PCGS. Variety 1.
Ranked # 3 on Doug Winter's Condition Census, this piece only
trails the Bass MS66 and the New England Collection MS65. The Small
Date variety is more plentiful than its Large Date counterpart, yet
it is still elusive in any Mint State grade. Just 59 examples have
been certified by PCGS in all grades from MS60 through MS64 (minus
resubmissions and crossovers). The distinction between the two date
sizes is simple: the Small Date has a Crosslet 4 in the date, the
digit 4 in the Large Date is a Plain style 4 without a crosslet on
the right end of the crossbar. The obverse of this example displays
a prominent raised die lump on Liberty's neck, the reverse with a
similar raised die lump in the field below the right wing. This
example is sharply struck with frosty yellow-gold luster and
excellent surfaces for the grade. A splendid, Choice Mint State
example of this elusive issue. Population: 6 in 64, 0 finer
