    Description

One of the Finest Known 1843-O Small Date Quarter Eagles

1843-O Small Date MS 63 PCGS. Fully prooflike with unusual contrast noted between the reflective fields and the frosted devices. Light, cloudy, orange-gold color covers surfaces that are clean and vibrant. The strike is as sharp as one could wish for on a New Orleans product from this era, with nearly complete detail noted on the hair and feathers as well as on the radial lines of the stars.
The 1843-O Small Date is the most available quarter eagle from this mint in Uncirculated. There are approximately 30-40 pieces known in mint condition but at least three-quarters are in the MS 60 to MS 61 grade range. Accurately graded MS 62s are very scarce and this date is quite rare in MS 63. There are two or three known in MS 64 and no gems.
As of June 1999, PCGS had graded one example of this date in MS 63 and two finer (both MS 64). NGC had graded one in MS 63 and one better (an MS 64).
From the Ronald W. Brown Acadiana Collection; Ex: 1998 FUN Sale (Heritage, 1/98), lot 7535, where it realized $6,210; Norweb II (Bowers and Merena, 3/88), lot 1980, where it brought $1,650.
