Description
1844-D Quarter Eagle, AU58
From the Bass Collection
1844-D $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Winter 5-J. Ex: Bass. The late Harry
W. Bass, Jr. had seven 1844-D quarter eagles that Bowers and Merena
sold in 1999 and 2000. Three of those coins were from the present
variety and four were from the Winter 5-I dies. Two of the three
examples of Winter 5-J in the Bass sales were plated, and this
piece does not appear to match either plate. Considerable luster
remains on the brilliant yellow-gold surfaces of this near-Mint
example that exhibits splashes of rose toning. The design
definition is remarkably sharp. Census: 40 in 58, 22 finer
(12/24).Ex: Ed Shapiro (1/17/1968); Harry W. Bass, Jr. (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 368.(Registry values: P2)
