Condition Census 1844-D Quarter Eagle, MS63

1844-D $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Variety 5-H. The more frequently encountered variety, this variant shows the mintmark properly aligned and not slanted downward as seen on Reverse I. With a reported mintage of 17,332 pieces, the 1844-D is also one of the more frequently encountered quarter eagles from the Dahlonega Mint. However, while "common" in the context of D-mint quarter eagles, the 1844-D is still a scarce issue. Only 175-200 pieces are believed known in all grades, and probably no more than 10 coins are extant today in Mint State. This piece has bright, satiny mint luster and rich yellow-gold surfaces but is weakly defined in the centers, as often found. This particular coin is identifiable as the Ex: Montgomery coin by the presence of a tiny mark on Liberty's cheek and a dash of porosity below the eagle's right (facing) wing. Doug Winter ranks this coin in a tie for the number two position in his Condition Census. Census: 6 in 63, 0 finer (4/09).
