    Unusual, Sharply Struck Mint State
    1845-D Quarter Eagle

1845-D $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. The only dies known for the issue of some 19,460 pieces. The present Mint State example is simply a superlative representative of this issue, one that Doug Winter calls "extremely rare in Uncirculated." He adds that most examples show poor eye appeal due to "serious marks and subdued luster," and this piece is the fortunate exception. The original color is a deep reddish-gold, a bit more prominent on the reverse, and the few scattered marks are undistracting, particularly given the thick mint luster that prevails. The surfaces are sharply struck throughout. A small grease stain behind the nose provides a pedigree marker. Population: 4 in 61, 4 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P2)
