Description

1845-O Two and a Half, AU58
Rarest O-Mint Issue of Denomination

1845-O $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. The 1845-O has the lowest mintage of any O-mint two and a half. Doug Winter calls it "far and away the rarest quarter eagle from the New Orleans Mint." No mintage was listed in the annual Mint Report, and the issue was unknown prior to an announcement in the December 1894 Numismatist. Few if any were saved, given that the single finest at NGC is graded MS60. Only one die pair is known, identified by a boldly repunched 1 in the date, and a mintmark that touches the top of the fraction bar and overlaps the bottom of the fletchings. This is a pleasing example with lightly abraded honey-gold surfaces. Luster outlines design elements. A narrow diagonal strike-through above star 13 is as made. The central strike shows incompleteness usual for the issue. Census: 11 in 58, 1 finer (11/21).
