Description
1845-O Quarter Eagle, AU58
Exceedingly Rare This Fine
1845-O $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Variety 1. The 1845-O is an
underrated rarity in the quarter eagle series. This is the rarest
quarter eagle from the New Orleans Mint, and it is even rarer than
most Dahlonega and Charlotte dates. Doug Winter estimates that only
65 to 75 pieces are known in all grades, although PCGS suggests 80
to 100 coins may survive. Our analysis of auction data suggests
that the actual number of surviving examples in gradable condition
may be balanced in the middle. High-end AU representatives are
decidedly rare, and Mint State coins are prohibitively so. Winter
reports only three Uncirculated survivors, which is the same number
of Mint State coins certified by PCGS and NGC combined. The present near-Mint coin displays satiny green-gold surfaces with remnants of luster in the protected portions of the fields. The obverse is well-defined, but the reverse has some typical weakness on the shield area. A linear planchet depression behind Liberty's neck is mint-made, as there are no detracting abrasions. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 3 in 58, 2 finer (7/16).
