Description

1846 Quarter Eagle, MS62
Rare in Mint State, Few are Finer
CAC Endorsed

1846 $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. CAC. The 1846 Liberty Head quarter eagle, from a low production of 21,598 business strikes, is scarce in all grades and rare in Mint State. The issue is one that appears to have circulated extensively, as the average certified survivor today is only at the Choice XF to AU level. The present MS62 PCGS specimen is one of only four submissions at that grade -- not necessarily all separate coins -- with three MS63 examples finer (3/25). This coin boasts an excellent strike that brings up all of the hair detail in the center, as well as the star radials around the periphery. A few thin abrasions account for the grade, over yellow-gold surfaces that are -- perhaps unsurprisingly given the small mintage -- fairly prooflike. Population: 4 in 62, 3 finer. CAC: 1 in 62, 3 finer (3/25).(Registry values: P2)
