Description

1846 Quarter Eagle, MS62
Unappreciated Condition Rarity

1846 $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. The 1846 quarter eagle is extremely rare in Mint State, scarce in all grades, and generally unrecognized for its rarity. More than 30 years ago David Akers wrote these remarkable words concerning the issue:

"This is a very scarce and generally unappreciated date. Its number of appearances at auction (45 [out of 226 auctions between 1921-1975]) is lower than for many of the highly regarded dates in this series such as the 1848 CAL., the 1881, and the 1796 No Stars, to name just a few. As the auction records show, specimens better than EF are extremely rare."

Even today, only a small handful of Mint State coins have been certified, with duplications almost certain. This piece offers bright, semiprooflike fields that border on fully prooflike, an effect enhanced by the die striations in the fields appearing under a loupe. The obverse is fully struck, while the usual softness occurs on the eagle's left (facing) leg. One contact mark above Liberty's head apparently accounts for much of the MS62 grade, as the coin appears that it would otherwise grade even higher. Population: 5 in 62, 1 finer (2/10).(Registry values: P2)
