Description

1846 Quarter Eagle, MS63
Condition Census Example

1846 $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. The 1846 quarter eagle, with a scant mintage of only 21,500 pieces, is a scarce and seemingly underappreciated issue in all grades. Mint State coins are rare at any level, but are most often seen only in the MS60 to MS61 range. Factor in an unknown number of resubmissions, and this issue appears even rarer in the Mint State level. The present piece is tied with one other as the finest certified at NGC, and is rivaled only by two numerically equal coins at PCGS (10/14). The obverse is remarkably sharp on the stars and Liberty's hair curls, and the reverse shows only a touch of striking weakness on the eagle's left (facing) leg. This piece represents a rare and important opportunity that may not present itself again for quite some time.(Registry values: P2)
